I recently had the pleasure of collaborating with new interior kids on the block, Vaunt Design, who’s mission it is to create a thoughtful selection of ethically sourced, artisanal home ware by developing and nurturing relationships with exceptionally talented craft people from around the world – in fact as I type this the duo behind Vaunt Design are in India sourcing products for their 2019 collection!
There’s nothing that I love more than discovering a new online interior brand, as a full time working Mum of two I very rarely find the time (if ever) to wander around interior shops at my leisure so having everything at a click of a button is like a dream come true for an interiors obsessive like me. Another great thing about online interior shopping is receiving your chosen item through the post, or post office if like me you always seem to miss the post man, and unwrapping the treasures inside, unlike online clothes shopping there’s no trepidation of whether the item inside is going to fit or if it’ll look anything like it does on the gorgeous twenty-something model wearing it on the website!
Having fired emails back and forth for a little bit discussing ideas about working together I decided to find out a bit more about the dynamic duo behind Vaunt Design. So grab a cuppa, put your feet up for five minutes and find out what it’s really like to own your own interior design brand. (I did feel a little Cilla Black / Blind Date at the start!)
Hello! Tell me a little bit about yourself
It may come as no surprise that both my wife, Abi and I are interior freaks! I don’t think you could remain sane in this industry without that deep-rooted passion for it to be honest, let alone be successful.
Being in this Industry we’re obviously surrounded by the latest products and trends, trying to constantly push the business forward and keep ahead of the curve. That said we’re on the other side of the fence too. We love nothing more than stumbling across those little ‘finds’ and trying to figure out where they’re going to fit in our home.
What drove you to start Vaunt Design?
I think the idea was born out of a combination of 2 things, our love of interior design and travel.
The spark that lit the flame came from the renovation of our beautiful period apartment 3 years ago. It was tough work but we truly enjoyed the process and seeing it develop into the place it is today.
With regards to the travel, we have, over the last 5 – 6 years fallen in love with travelling and when we realised we may just be able to carve a living out of a mixture of both travelling and interiors, we went for it!
How many of you make up the team?
Currently, my wife and I run the business on the day-to-day. I should take a second to thank the family and friends as well however as, as cliché as it sounds, we wouldn’t be in the position we’re in today without their incredible help. Thank you, guys!
What is the design ethos at Vaunt Design?
It’s very simple, stripped back, earthy designs with most items sourced directly from the artisans who make them. We use materials that are as close to their original state as possible to really impart a sense of clean, natural living.
Do you have any favourite pieces in your collection?
Hmm, really tough question. All you’d need to do is stroll through our house to realise we do, truly love them all. It’s like a Vaunt Design showroom at the minute, but let’s go for the concrete Saint head pot. I just remember seeing it for the first time and falling totally in love. There’s one displayed proudly on our kitchen shelves with a half-dead aloe vera in him currently. That reminds me, I really should switch that out!
Where do you source your pieces from?
We source from all over the world. Certain countries specialise in certain products so if we’re in need of a new rug collection, for example, we know to jump on a plane to India! Our main countries are India, Denmark, China, Turkey and here in the UK.
Where do you get your design inspiration from?
I think inspiration comes from everywhere. Our social channels are a superb source of inspiration as there are so many people out there doing an incredible job of blogging their interior related ventures of all kinds. Not least yourself Jen of course!
Our competitors, again are a great source of inspiration. There are some superb little boutique companies out there selling some truly stunning and original homewares.
Our customers inspire and motivate us the most I guess. When they love a product or service and then tell us about it, that’s the best feeling.
You’ve worked with some great influencer’s on Instagram, how does this help your business?
Instagram is brilliant as its just chock full of like-minded people. You really don’t have to search far before you find a host of people with the same interests.
In terms of the accounts we’ve worked with, again they’ve been so positive for us as they open the door to a whole different group of potential customers, allow us to showcase our products and be in direct contact with them.
How do you use social media to support your business?
We use Facebook and Pinterest to help grow the business, however, Instagram has been the platform that we have seen the best returns on, so we really focus our energy there.
We use our social accounts to broaden the reach and get our name and products out there. We use them to tell our story, define our brand and to speak directly with customers.
I truly believe transparency is the key to a long-lasting, healthy business, so we use our social accounts to let our followers in on what we’re up to on the day-to-day and our upcoming plans. It keeps them in the loop and helps to build trust.
What trends are you predicting for 2019?
There’s a big thing around bold colours at the moment for sure! Emerald greens and mustard’s are popping up everywhere. Also, bold coloured velvets with an almost retro sense of design and style. We love it!
